BOSQUE DEL APACHE

Every fall tens of thousands of Sandhill Cranes, Arctic Snow Geese and Canada Geese, along with dozens of species of ducks and other waterfowl, arrive to spend the winter at Bosque del Apache. We'll also typically see Bald Eagles, Osprey, Whooping Cranes and Ringnecked Pheasants. More than 350 species of birds have been spotted here, making it one of the premier bird watching sites in the United States. Expect to also see coyotes and occasionally pronghorned antelope.

You don't need to be a hiker to take this tour, although there are trails available for those who want to do some exploring. There are dozens of ponds we can visit, many with observation decks, and one of the largest ponds has a walkway accross it. We'll also stop at the Visitor's Center, where a snack bar and restrooms are available. We plan this tour so that we're still there at sunset, as the cranes and geese fly out in the morning and return in the evening. The sight and sound of the late afternoon sky filled with tens of thousands of Sandhill Cranes, Arctic Snow Geese and Canada Geese flying into the Bosque is an incredible experience you will never forget!

Best time: Mid November to early March
